Dead Street School

  • Dead Street School 41 Queen Street Hitchin, England, SG4 9TS United Kingdom (map)

Originally built in the mid-1800s, Dead Street School (also known as British Schools Museum) is a preserved Victorian-era schoolhouse with a haunting history that goes well beyond dusty blackboards and old desks.

Many investigators report intense feelings of unease — especially in the Headmaster’s office, where staff and guests have heard disembodied footsteps, doors slamming on their own, and the unmistakable sound of chalk writing on a board... when the room is empty. Children’s laughter, sobbing, and shuffling footsteps echo through the halls long after dark, and some even claim to have seen full-bodied apparitions wearing period clothing.

The folklore here is thick with residual energy — strict punishment, high emotion, and stories of one particularly cruel teacher whose energy seems to linger. Cold spots, EMF spikes, and reports of guests being touched or pushed are common, especially in the older classrooms and cellars.

If you’ve ever wondered what a school detention might feel like in the afterlife… Dead Street School is the place to find out.
