Perched on the coast of Weymouth, Nothe Fort was built in the 1860s to defend the naval harbour from attack — but some say its spirits are far from at rest. Used during both World Wars and later as a nuclear shelter during the Cold War, the fort has layers of military history… and just as many ghost stories.
Its long, echoing tunnels are known for heavy footsteps when no one’s there, shadowy figures in full uniform, and voices echoing from empty cells. The infamous Whistling Gunner is said to roam the passageways — visitors have reported hearing him whistling softly before the air turns ice cold.
Poltergeist activity is also common. Torches flicker, objects move, and some guests have experienced overwhelming dread in the magazine rooms where ammunition was once stored. There's even a persistent tale of a World War II soldier who took his own life in one of the upper rooms — and whose presence is still felt, particularly when investigations go quiet elsewhere.
Folklore or not, Nothe Fort is a place where history lingers — and it’s not shy about making itself known.
