Wookey Hole

  • Wookey Hole High Street Wells, England, BA5 1BA United Kingdom (map)

Nestled deep in the Mendip Hills, Wookey Hole is one of the UK’s most iconic underground locations — known not only for its dramatic natural cave system but for the eerie energy that clings to the rock like mist.

At the heart of the legend is the infamous Witch of Wookey, said to have lived in the caves over a thousand years ago. According to local folklore, she cursed nearby villagers, poisoned wells, and was eventually turned to stone by a monk who banished her with holy water. To this day, a stalagmite formation said to be her petrified figure still stands, eerily human-shaped and surrounded by silence.

Modern investigators report strange sounds — echoing whispers, footsteps in dripping chambers, and unexplained lights deep in the darker parts of the cave system. There’s also been talk of sudden nausea, disorientation, and equipment cutting out entirely with no explanation. Though there are fewer traditional “ghosts,” the overwhelming residual energy of the site can feel just as powerful.

It’s a place steeped in folklore, ritual, and ancient fear — and while the Witch may be legend… the energy down there? That’s very, very real.
