Portsmouth Arms Hotel

  • Portsmouth Arms Hotel Umberleigh, England, EX37 9ND United Kingdom (map)

This seemingly traditional Devonshire inn has a history far older — and far darker — than its beer garden suggests. The Portsmouth Arms Hotel has stood for over 300 years and has built a reputation as one of the most paranormally active pubs in the region.

Guests report heavy footsteps pacing upstairs when no one is there, glasses smashing without warning, and an oppressive energy in the bar area that grows stronger after midnight. Staff have reported being touched, pushed, and even scratched — particularly in the cellar, where lights frequently flicker and objects move on their own.

The most infamous spirit said to haunt the pub is known only as The Angry Man. Thought to be linked to a violent altercation in the building’s history, his presence is strongest in the basement and near the fireplace. Several guests have reported being overcome with rage or nausea in his known hotspots — while others experience unexplained temperature drops and equipment malfunctions.

Local folklore adds fuel to the fire with tales of a drowned child, a long-ago murder covered up by inn staff, and the belief that something was once sealed in the walls… and shouldn’t be disturbed.

The Portsmouth Arms might still serve spirits — but not all of them come in bottles.
